List 1- Thing 54
Apr. 7th, 2009 12:38 am54. Watch every nominated movie from the Academy Awards (excluding foreign film) from 2007-2009
I've got to say: 2007 was a DARK year for movies. Even the short films are dark and depressing for the most part!
Madame Tutli-Putli- Huh. This one confused me. Is it all metaphor or what? Every time I thought I had it worked out, something else really weird happened. I like the gritty, realistic style at times, and at other times I thought it was a bit disconcerting. I've gone cross-country on a trail a few times and I'm glad nothing like this adventure happened to me. How strangely weird and beautiful. But still a bit confusing.
Meme les Pigeons Vont au Pradis (Even Pigeons Go to Heaven)- The lightest of this bunch! In it, death is on its way to take an old man. A (?)priest shows up to trick him out of his money by offering him a 'get out of Hell' machine. The little twists made me laugh out loud, but it's still a dark, somewhat shocking ending!
Peter and the Wolf- Perhaps I was too young when I watched the version of Peter and the Wolf on the Wonderful World of Disney, but I didn't remember about the animals being killed and eaten and mauled and mistreated! The animation isn't really my style, though it's very nice. And the creator did some very interesting things with the animals to fit the music in unique ways. I like the bird and its balloon to help it fly, for example. And the ending is great, really. i was just a bit shocked about parts I hadn't remembered!
At Night- I'm currently reading a book about a young woman with cancer, so watching this came at the right time, I guess you could say. It's Terribly depressing but really sweet at the same time. I really loved the raw emotions and dynamics between & among all the characters. It totally broke my heart and made me both smile and tear up.
Il Supplente (The Substitute)- This guy is crazy. This class is crazy. And one kid has a ball autographed by Del Piero... in case you missed that the first hundred times it was mentioned. It's certainly an interesting ending but... this was seriously weird.
Tanghi Argentini- The BEST! I laughed out loud several times and the ending rocked my world. I wish I had someone at my workplace like Andre! What a fun, short film!
The Tonto Woman- Hmm. A little slow for my taste, but I can see why it was nominated. I like the emotions and concepts behind it. And I like the (likeable) main characters. I rather like movies where shades of gray become black and white for you by the end.
Le Mozart Des Pickpockets (The Mozart of Pockpockets)- Ha! The kid was adorable the way he invited himself into this pair of pickpockets. This didn't have the ending I wanted, but a good one none the less. I certainly enjoyed it and it kept me wondering the whole time in a good way. I'm surprised this beat some of the others (like At Night) but I'm glad it did because it was a great one to end with.
