21. Disney cartoon show marathon

On the last weekend of December, I decided to start this marathon! I began with the new series of DuckTales. I'd been wanting to watch it for a while now, especially because David Tennant voices Scrooge McDuck. I was immediately charmed by it and watched every episode in its three season run (all 75).

There was still time left in my holiday weekend, so I watched a few episodes of shows from my childhood: Gummi Bears, Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers, TaleSpin, and Darkwing Duck. The shows were not as great as I remembered them, but that might be also because I was comparing them to the reboot of DuckTales with its more modern storylines and much better animation. Still, I did love them all, and it was so great to watch a few episodes of them all.

My FAVORITE thing was, however, that the new DuckTales show has some mention or overlap with all of these shows from my childhood. They were little in-jokes (or BIG in-jokes) that people from my generation would have picked up on that kids these days wouldn't have. I laughed so much over some of them. Oh, I also loved hearing Lin-Manuel Miranda voice one of the characters! Definitely so happy to have finally seen that whole series. It was a fun Disney show-filed weekend!

I fell behind in logging my accomplishments on this blog. I'm catching up in February 2024 and backdating entries to keep my records consistent.

21. Complete 5 unfinished things from previous lists

I think I previously noted that I'd finished watching Smallville, which was Thing 60 off List 4. Here are the other things I managed to complete off previous lists:

2. Thing 86 off list 4: I hosted a party after my list 4 completed to complete this task. Having my friends over is a great incentive to get my house clean and an even better time because I get to be with my friends.

3. Thing 27 off list 1: Get rid of 5 boxes of things. I have only managed 5 boxes, which is well below another thing goal I have, but it's just enough to complete this one from a previous list.

4. Thing 39 off list 1: Go through Real Simple magazine collection. I went through and got rid of several hundred issues that I'd been saving to collect articles from. It felt good to clear those out (and enjoy the magazine issues again before tossing them out)

5. Thing 38 off list 2: Write 7 Strokes stories. I wrote 3 during this current list's time period, but this month during NaNoWriMo I wrote 4 more. I finished the last one up this morning. So I'm calling this officially done!

List #4
Item 60. Watch all of Smallville

Yesterday, I finished Smallville! After 10 seasons, it definitely wasn't all the best, but it wrapped up pretty well, so I'm glad that I stuck with it. It was a lot of fun seeing so many actors familiar to me show up in major roles. It was also really interesting to see how they worked some of the familiar Superman elements into the show.

21. Each summer, pick a classic or book I have been hesitant to read and give it a try

Yesterday, I finished earreading Ethan Frome. I chose it for two reasons. First, it was only 4 discs long, so I knew I'd be able to read it during the bit of summer that applied to the 2018 portion of my 101 Things list. And, second, we named a printer at work "Edith" after Edith Wharton, and I wanted to read one of her books.

Based on the subject matter of the story, I really didn't expect to like it. And, yeah, I didn't particularly love the emotional affair plot. But I did really love the writing and the raw, honest portrayals of people. It's kind of amazing to see how people haven't changed in the hundred years since this book was published. Sure, the language and cultural levels of indecency were different, but the way the characters acted was so realistic.

The point of view was a little strange. I think seeing how different Frome was from one part of the story to the next (in flashback) and back again was great, but there was so much detail and inner thought in the section about Frome's story, and I couldn't understand how Frome had communicated it all so deeply and honestly to the narrator. So it took a little suspension of disbelief to get me through. But the way the characters interacted? That felt familiar and authentic. And the descriptions of everything were just beautiful.

Not my favorite classic, but I'm still glad I finally read it in the end.

21. Each summer, pick a classic or book I have been hesitant to read and give it a try

This year I read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I chose this one partly because it's one everyone seems to have read except for me (in my high school advanced classes, we were specifically not allowed to read the "easy Steinbeck" like this) and partly because I was pretty sure I knew what I was in for. Countless shows, books, and movies reference this work or parody it, and I wanted to be "in" on the joke finally. Turns out that Highlander episode was pretty darn spot-on with its interpretation of it.

Thing I didn't like: I had an idea that there might be a bit of a body count racked up in this one, and I was prepared for that. What I wasn't prepared for were all of the animal deaths. There were SO MANY dead animals. I had a hard time with that emotionally. People dying I can deal with. But animals... that's harder for me.

Thing I liked: Steinbeck's setting descriptions in this book are my new favorite. There are only a few times he goes into the details about setting, but every single time he does, he not only paints a clear picture but does so in a way that makes every single detail ALSO somehow relevant to the story or character development at the same time. It was magical the way he moved us forward on multiple levels at once, with no throw away words. His character voices were also fantastic--each unique and strong. But the setting descriptions... I can't get over how he did that.

I don't know if "enjoy" is the right word to use, but I did like the book. It packs a strong punch but also captures human nature well--the good and the bad. I'm glad I finally read it.

21. Each summer, pick a classic or book I have been hesitant to read and give it a try

This summer, I chose Beloved by Toni Morrison. In a lot of ways I wish I'd read this in high school or college because it would have meant getting to talk about it with people, hearing their interpretations, over-analyzing every single sentence and moment. I feel like this is one of those books I could read a hundred times and still find things to pause and think about in it. There are just so many themes and emotions. It shows the rawness of human nature, the passions and weaknesses of flesh. It says so much about people but also makes you take a look at yourself, at the truest part of yourself you can't deny--do you embrace it and love it or do you let it destroy you slowly from the inside?

Some of the graphic scenes made it a difficult book to read. But Toni Morrison's gorgeous language also made it a pleasure to read, if that makes any sense. I'm so glad my coworker recommended it to me.

Soooooo... I forgot about Canada Day. I had the book set aside. I even acknowledged the day because [livejournal.com profile] 6of8 sent an adorable picture my way. But for some reason I thought my next release was July 4th. Oops! So I release this one two days late. But I still released it. And, well, Canada Day isn't exactly celebrated here in the US. So I think I'm giving myself a pass here.

I'd just had my gallbladder out three days before, but my mother understands my need to BookCross. So she drove me over to the community center where there's a flagpole to release this on Flag Day. The problem was that there was a boy scout troop there at that moment doing a ceremony. So we quickly turned back and came back half an hour later when they were done.
