Tree of Life- Okay. Yeah. I didn't love this one. I didn't even like it. It was gorgeous, yes, but I don't like modern art and I don't particularly like this style of roundabout storytelling. I usually like unconventional and non-linear narratives. But this particular movie did not work for me at all. Telling the personal story of a man at the crossroads of his life, thinking about his dead brother, and flashing back to the creation of the universe and dinosaurs? Yes, I understand where he was going with it. And the spirituality behind it and the visuals themselves were lovely. But to me that doesn't tell the story. Neither do a bunch of flashbacks about a dad who isn't good at expressing his love and throws his kids into their rooms for having a smart mouth. Ugh. I'm not a fan. I actually ended up watching this on 1.5 speed just to get it over with faster.

True Grit- This movie, on the other hand, I LOVED. Loved so very, very much. I'm so glad I watched this to shake off the feeling of bleh I was left with after Tree of Life. This movie was fantastic, full of strong characters with clear motivations, full of clever dialogue and beautiful, real moments. Even the moments that were death-filled were also filled with beauty. I put off watching it for a while, not sure I'd like it as I'm not really a fan of westerns. How wrong I was! I loved every second of this movie and would happily watch it again and again, especially if it meant further driving out the memory of the Tree of Life.

Django Unchained- Reservoir Dogs is the only Quentin Tarantino movie I've liked. So I was ready to not like this. And, yeah, there was plenty of unnecessary blood, which makes me feel like the movie was conceptualized by a six-year-old boy. But apart from that, I loved it. I was absolutely won over almost immediately by the dynamic Dr. King Schultz and his horse. The evolving musical narrative accompanyment was fantastically clever. The emotion raw and real. I never thought I'd laugh through a scene about the KKK, but there it was. Not to mention that it was shot so artistically without feeling like he was showing off, which is how I usually feel.
