66. Participate in the 29 Gifts Movement
After a long time thinking about when to do this, I decided I didn't know how to do it. Unfortunately, the site seems to have gone away! But then I discovered it wasn't gone, just relocated to: https://follr.com/Communities/29Gifts And I found out that Cami Walker's book was in my local library. So I started reading with the intention of starting the challenge after finishing. Then I realized the challenge is similar to NaNoWriMo--that I need to just start and stop thinking about it. So I found an opportunity to give and... just started! The people at the 29 Gifts community were wonderfully supportive and helped motivate me to get started.
My life didn't change. In fact, some bad things happened to me during the 29 days. But plenty of good happened as well. I'm normally a pretty generous person, so it wasn't really a big change for me. The difference was giving every day without fail and giving with generosity and purpose, being aware of the gift and giving from the heart. It was nice to pause and acknowledge each gift as I gave it.
Day 1- I saw a license plate I loved on a car around town for the second time. This time, it was parked in front of a doctor's office. So I parked next to it, wrote a note of "I LOVE your license place!" with a heart and left the note on their car under a windshield wiper. I'm a big Harry Potter fan and the license plate is MUGGL and then the handicapped symbol standing in for the E in MUGGLE. I've been wanting to leave notes on cars with great license plates ever since I started doing a monthly post on my blog about the best vanity plates. So it was great to finally get a chance to leave a note and let these owners know (I've featured their license plate on my blog before... oh man, maybe I should have said that in the note? DOH! Maybe I'll see them again some day.) I hope it made them smile when they came out of the doctor's office.

Day 2- Donating when asked. During breakfast, I got an email from Catster asking me to vote for a kitty. A litter company was going to give money to the shelter/rescue group that won the vote. So I voted. Later, as I was checking out at a store, I had the option to donate a school supply to needy kids. I don't usually do that as I have other places I donate school supplies, but I did this time.
Day 3- I'm not sure what to count for this day. My friend was heading out of town, so I quickly wrote up a story for her to read before she left (a short sequel to a story I wrote based on a prompt of hers last week). But the real gift was more to myself. My coworker had an oracle book she brought to work and I asked it a question about money, which is tight for me right now. I concentrated on the question and the answer the book gave me was much more positive than I'd have thought. It made me think maybe I should apply my talents to the problem and approach it in other ways in order to succeed. A few hours later, I was at the store and a quarter someone had dropped rolled over to me. I stopped it with my foot and picked it up for the guy who came over to retrieve it. I don't know if that was a sign, but I'm taking it as one. So the permission to believe in myself was the bigger gift this day.
Day 4- Went to a Harry Potter birthday party my meetup group puts together each year (read: the event organizer and I, as assistant organizer put together each year). There, I gave her a card I'd written from the heart, thanking her for supporting me during my recent health problems and reaffirming my commitment to the group. I felt like I was slacking off or taking it too easy when I was sick for 10 months. I wanted her to know that now that I'm starting to feel better, I want to put more energy into the group. I am glad to have gotten the chance to share my feelings with her and feel good about following through with my passion for the group, its members, and our fun activities and discussions.
Day 5- An online friend's husband saw I make Artist Trading cards. So he kindly sent me two of his own! This day I sat down and hand-drew two for him. I don't usually draw mine, but I really enjoyed spending so much time drawing and putting part of myself into them as well as showing my style. I included a postcard for swap-bot where I swap my ATCs and have recently been named an ambassador. I also included an AnySoldier.com postcard as my friend has been thinking of participating in that and I've enjoyed sending packages there in the past. I put all these in an envelope and mailed them.
Day 6- I woke up half an hour early and made a Happy Birthday sign for my previous boss, whose birthday was last week (this was her first day back in the office after her vacation). Last week, when she was gone, we put up a gallery of framed magazine covers from the past year of our magazine and I wrapped them in red streamers like ribbons. But I wanted to make a sign for her door to welcome her back and wanted it up before she got into work. I beat her by about 15 minutes as she came in early as well. Thank goodness I sacrificed a bit of sleep. The surprise was worth it and I'm glad I got to see her reaction to the surprise gift :-)

Day 7- I am super busy at work and at home and every second of my day is precious to me. (I'm not sure I'm going to meet several huge deadlines). But I still took a few hours out of my night and stayed up until 1:30 to write and finish a story for my friend whose birthday is today. I was exhausted but glad to sacrifice some sleep in order to write her something with one of her favorite characters for her birthday.
Day 8- A seriously busy day, but I still managed to find a couple ways to give a gift. I got a pack of Peanut M&Ms in my bag for the LEGO convention I'm attending and can't eat them. I offered them at work and found out one of my newer coworkers loves Peanut M&Ms. Glad I could find them a good home! I also purchased this year's charity LEGO minifigure, benefiting Sladechild Foundation: http://www.sladechild.org/
Day 9- It's the birthday of Harry Potter and his author, JK Rowling. So I donated to the Harry Potter Alliance: http://thehpalliance.org/ It's a nonprofit that finds ways to better the world using examples and themes from the Harry Potter books. I've already made a donation there this year, so I wasn't planning on making another. But this was a nice way for this fangirl to give back.
Day 10- I bought extra raffle tickets at the LEGO charity raffle. I didn't end up winning anything in the raffle, but I did win something in the LEGO charity silent auction. I also walked around, taking pictures of people's LEGO creations (MOCs). I saw two that completely blew me away. I took out my pad and left long notes at each of the creations to let the creators know that I loved them so much. One was a recreation of one of my favorite toys from childhood: a tumble tower. The other was a recreation of the reception area in the Fawlty Towers televsion show. Both seriously impressed me and I wanted to let the people who created them know how amazing I thought they were.
Day 11- I woke up early and drove over to one of my best friend's houses. I had a few things to give her, and I was in her neck of the woods before the LEGO convention started that morning. I threw in a bunch of extra items--of one each kind of item--that I got as a swap-bot Ambassador. I know she likes swag (postcards, pins, pencils, stickers) so it was fun giving her a little something to smile at. But it was also just really nice to stop my hectic pace for a few minutes and catch up with her :-)
Day 12- I volunteered yesterday and today at the LEGO convention. It's a fan-run convention with no paid staff, so the whole thing must have volunteers to run. I did hand stamping duty for the first time. Yesterday was good, but today we were swamped. So I stayed an extra hour after my shift ended in order to help out until reinforecements could arrive. I am glad to have been able to give of my time to help them out a little more than I'd expected.
Day 13- At the LEGO convention, I picked up some LEGO earrings for a good friend on swap-bot who hasn't been around lately because she's been in the middle of a move. I mailed the unexpected surprise to her.
Day 14- I volunteer twice a week at the library and I worked a little extra after my shift to finish up the lists I'd been working on for the librarians.
Day 15- I wasn't sure what to do for my gift today, but the opportunity presented itself. A writer in my Writers' Roundtable group just finished her first full manuscript (yay!). I really want to read it, but I knew I was really busy this month. Still, I recognized it as an opportunity to give, so I offtered to take it and read it for her. I told her I probably wouldn't be able to finish it until September (I'm having surgery in the middle of the month, so I suspect I'll have a few days off my feet and I'll definitely be able to read then). But she said she didn't mind waiting. I can't wait for the time to read it and find out what happens in the parts she hasn't workshopped yet! It was also a good lesson to myself to be more open with my generosity and not just give what is easy for me.
Day 16- My part-timer was walking down the hill to work and so I stopped and gave her a ride down the street to work. I've never had a chance to do that with any of our employees who don't have cars, so it was nice to be able to do this for her for the first time.
Day 17- My other part-timer's last day was today. I bought some snacks for the office and I wrote an appreciation of him in computer code for everyone in the office to sign (I framed it). I bought some balloons in our organization's colors and drew our logo on it. But the big gift was a copy of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian. We saw the author together at our annual conference this year. it was my part-timer's first conference, so I wanted to give him this book--my favorite of Sherman Alexie's books--for him to enjoy and remember his time with us in Seattle this year.

Day 18- I tried to give a gift today that just didn't take. I'd been planning to give it and had the wording all worked out. But even though I insisted, the recipient just wouldn't allow me to give it. So I had to come up with something else. I ended up tearing my very favorite page out of my Wreck it Journal and giving it to my mother when she stopped by my house today. She ended up putting it on her fridge. It was very elementary school of us ;-)
Day 19- I read a copy of The Rockaways by Gilles Peress, published by the Concord Free Press. The book is offered free, but each reader is supposed to donate to charity to keep the generosity going. I finished reading the book a little while back but hadn't made my donation. The book was about super storm Sandy, and most places aren't still accepting donations for that, but I wanted my money to go to that region. So I donated to http://robinhood.org/rhsandy. I'd never heard of the organization before, but I liked reading about the organization's mission. It was also great to be a Robin Hood! What a fun message after donating :-)
Day 20- My mother was car-less today, so I called and offered to pick up groceries for her. But she didn't need anything. I was wondering what I should do instead for my daily gift when I got a phone call from Heifer International. They wanted me to commit to a monthly donation. I just don't have the money for that, unfortunately. But I took it as a sign. I went online and donated a little bit to buy a share of a goat. I had a conversation today at work about a goat (there's one featured on the cover of our magazine this month) so it seemed fitting.
Day 21- I cannot resist buying school supplies. I bought a few for myself and a bunch for ECHO. They collect school supplies for needy kids in our area every year. I used to volunteer there and packing backpacks with supplies based on school/class lists was one of my favorite things to do every year. It was rainy and dead that night, so the guys who took my donation were happy to see me. And I was happy to help out!

Day 22- The small indie theater near where I work/live started a Kickstarter to buy new seats. They desperately need new seats. I was going to donate anyway, but my coworker randomly brought it up to me today at work. We talked about what the theater meant to us and our times there. I took it as a sign. So I donated twice the amount I was planning to donate.
Day 23- Kinder to people in traffic. I usually get annoyed with people who try to turn out of the street entrance of the gas station near where I work. They could just go around to the side exit and turn right onto the street so easily. Instead they barge impatiently out of the station and expect for us to stop and let them in. It annoys me and I refuse to let them in. Well, today I took a deep breath and waved one into traffic in front of me. I was still a little annoyed, but it felt a little better to help something out that way. Then, on my way home, I waved over a bus. Everyone was blazng past it as it sat with its blinker on and there was no pause in traffic behind me. So I slowed and waved it into busy traffic.
Day 24- My sister stayed over at my house for the first time. We had a movie night and we ended up staying up later than anticipated. I'm not very good at offering my food (I'm one of those people who labels food in the fridge so other people don't eat it). So it was a big gift to offer her food for dinner and breakfast. It was a sort of generous I am not at all used to and it felt good, of course, because I love my sister and was happy to give her whatever I had to give.
Day 25- As I headed out of the grocery store, a desperate-looking guy tried to get me to donate to his charity. He had a table set up outside with a sad little canister. Normally, I think those sorts of things are not authentic, they're just people using the name of some organization to fill their pockets. But even if that was a the case, he needed my $1 more than I did. I never, ever give to religious/Christian organizations, so it was hard for me to hand over my money, especially when he kept blessing me, which I hate. But my donation made him feel good and maybe the money will end up at New Life for Youth after all and help to do some good.
Day 26- I was surprised to log into my http://kiva.org account and find that I had enough in repayments to make another loan. A few weeks ago when I looked, I only had $7. I ended up making a loan to a woman in Indonesia to help her build a bathroom (in honor of the bathrooms at my workplace that keep malfunctioning). I also donated the suggested amount to Kiva for their operation costs (which I don’t always do)
Day 27- Coworker gooness. A coworker wasn't feeling well and was looking for honey around the office. I didn't have any honey, but I did give her some of my prized chamomile, vanilla, & honey tea. It wasn't exactly honey, but it was as close as I could get. And, again, I'm not good at giving of my personal food stash, so those two small bags were a big gesture from my heart. I also said a very warm "Goodnight!" to a coworker who I suspect hates me. It wasn't returned as he headed out the door, but that's all right; it was the effort that was important.
Day 28- I got the book 11/22/63 out of the library and drove it over to my parents' house. I've been wanting my mother to read it forever because I think she'd like it, but I know Stephen King isn't her favorite, so I was worried she might not appreciate it. It turns out she just finished and book and was thrilled to see it.
Day 29- With several of my favorite celebrities doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, I decided I wanted to donate to the organization, one I wouldn't have donated to otherwise: http://www.alsa.org/
After a long time thinking about when to do this, I decided I didn't know how to do it. Unfortunately, the site seems to have gone away! But then I discovered it wasn't gone, just relocated to: https://follr.com/Communities/29Gifts And I found out that Cami Walker's book was in my local library. Date: 2014-08-22 01:15 am (UTC)Even without the 29 Gifts you really are a truly generous and giving person. Even only knowing you virtually this is very clear.
I feel very lucky to be your friend <3
