21. Each summer, pick a classic or book I have been hesitant to read and give it a try
This summer, I chose Beloved by Toni Morrison. In a lot of ways I wish I'd read this in high school or college because it would have meant getting to talk about it with people, hearing their interpretations, over-analyzing every single sentence and moment. I feel like this is one of those books I could read a hundred times and still find things to pause and think about in it. There are just so many themes and emotions. It shows the rawness of human nature, the passions and weaknesses of flesh. It says so much about people but also makes you take a look at yourself, at the truest part of yourself you can't deny--do you embrace it and love it or do you let it destroy you slowly from the inside?
Some of the graphic scenes made it a difficult book to read. But Toni Morrison's gorgeous language also made it a pleasure to read, if that makes any sense. I'm so glad my coworker recommended it to me.
