List 1- Thing 54
Jul. 18th, 2007 09:50 pm54. Watch every nominated movie from the Academy Awards (excluding foreign film) from 2007-2009
Just finished watching Mel Gibson's Apocalypto. This was the one movie on the list I had no desire to see-- because of Mel Gibson. How full of yourself must you be to include your name in the title? I dunno what to say about this movie, really. It wasn't bad, and if anyone else had created it, I probably would have enjoyed it immensely. But there were so many of Mel's trademarks, from the gruesome visuals there for shock value's sake to the obvious Christ figure. So I'm just going to list my thoughts:
-I liked the main characters a lot- hard not to side with them, really. Which isn't necessarily a good thing. It was a striking black or white sort of film without much depth either way. Good guys are normal and noble. Bad guys are unbelievably horrible. But, yeah, I liked the good guys. Go figure.
-Took me until the end of the first scene to realize I could watch it with subtitles. I didn't have trouble figuring out what was going on... but I think I got a little more having watched it with the subtitles, so I left them on, at least to learn character names and such. I think it's watchable without them... and sometimes I laughed at the subtitles for their bad translation. So it's a toss-up.
-This was definitely one of those "Oh my GOD did you see that??! Well, it's can't get any worse!" sorts of movies where, three seconds later, it somehow does manage to get worse.
-The themes were very simple but not painfully so, I thought. Nothing really new, though. And some predictable bits.
-Very beautiful. The concentrations on setting and culture were wonderful.
-My favorite part was actually the obvious but nonetheless beautiful jaguar imagery.
