List 1- Thing 61
Jul. 29th, 2007 02:12 am61. Learn how to play Mahjong
Today I attempted to teach myself Mahjong. I printed directions/rules off the internet several years ago when I got a set. We actually have two sets in the house now. We got one from my grandparents' house after they passed away, and my father picked the other one up in The Phillipines before that. Luckily, the set from my grandparents came with a small directions booklet.
I took the plastic off my set and followed along with both directions, making it about halfway through today. I played a practice game with myself (and myself and myself- yes, I had to be four people). I think I have the basics down... but there are soooooooo many special cases and different ways of playing (one of my sets has the jokers and the other doesn't, and both have the extra flower/season cards). And there are SO many terms to learn. Not to mention that each site/source spells things differently. So I stopped for the night after the basics.

It's going to take a LONG time to memorize all this and learn it well enough to play it. Some of it will of course be the sort of thing I pick up after doing it over and over again. But I need to understand and remember all the exceptions and special cases as well. At least I've made a start :-)

I play the solitare versions all the time on http://zone.msn.com but it's completely different from the classic game I'm trying to learn. It seems I can't get many details from Pogo without first signing up for an account, so I thought I'd ask.
I haven't been able to find anywhere online to play the actual game for free. And even so, I'd be too nervous to play against real people. I'd need computer opponents *blush*
