List 1- Thing 61
Jul. 29th, 2007 03:03 pm61. Learn how to play Mahjong
After
tinadp's suggestion of finding somewhere online to play, I searched around a bit more than I have before.
I watched the tutorial at: http://www.mahjongtime.com/ and found it most helpful. It mentioned two tiny things I didn't really know already.
Then I found this site: http://mahjong.game-host.org/ which sets up a crude Java-based board but lets you play for free against the computer, which is what I wanted to do. I've played a bunch of hands now, and I actually won a few rounds! I find it difficult to play there since there are no numbers on the tiles and I can't read chinese characters. Plus, it goes quickly and practically hands you your pungs, kongs, and chows which is both nice and sort of not a help at all.

I printed another set of directions back in 2005 which state: "Before long, you will be playing with certainty and confidence, and enjoying this game of skill and luck." Well, I'm not quite there yet, but after playing a while, I realize I DEFINITELY know what I'm doing. I can call up particular rules and names of tiles and such. And I can identify possible matches in order to play with a little bit of strategy- which is saying a lot, really.
I don't know it by heart (and I would definitely need to consult the scoring guide!) but I've definitely learned how to play. I'm not good at it, and can't play with much confidence... but I'm comfortable with it. So, I'm going to declare this particular goal finished. I'll need to continue to practice/play, however.
