25. Visit the Pentagon 9-11 Memorial
As it turns out, the hotel for the convention I was at over the weekend was right across the street from the Pentagon. On Sunday morning, I got up early and took a walk over to the memorial for the first time. I knew about the symbolism (having read about it and seen a segment or two on television about it) thought it was also peaceful and lovely. There were plenty of flowers and trees in bloom. I walked around the whole memorial slowly, paying attention to the numbers in each row (organized by year of birth) and remarking on the large range. I let my mind wander back to that day and what the attack took from us all. And I thought about the families and friends missing every one of the people represented in this memorial.
It was a sobering way to start the day, and I cried a few different times. But I'm certainly glad I finally took some time to see it.
